Studies have shown that the power of prayer actually works to physically heal and transform people. Meditation and hypnosis are similar to prayer. Human beings are wired to use this powerful technology to speed and support their journey.

For some people, spirituality involves connecting with a higher power. It also involves connecting with your higher purpose. We come into this world to learn and accomplish certain things. Understanding our higher purpose, and living our lives in alignment with that purpose often helps to bring a sense of peace and well-being. Connecting with spirituality also helps us to get in touch with our unmet needs, wants and desires which comes from living lives in conflict with our higher purpose.

Yoga for weight loss: now available at Skyler Madison

Introducing Prana Yoga, developed by Jeff Migdow, MD, a deeper way to experience yoga is now available at Skyler Madison. Yoga means union its purpose is to unite the mind, body and the spirit (breath). Many people only associate yoga with the postures. Yoga comes from one of the ancient Indian systems of thought that deals with “seeing things in a certain way.” It is based on the belief that we create problems and patterns in our lives because of how we perceive and interpret “things” in our lives. Yoga can help you change your perception by removing avidya, the Sanskrit word for the thought distortions that cloud our perception.

Prana Yoga is based on Kripalu yoga, as practiced and taught at the Kripalu Center, a well known center for yoga in Massachusetts. Prana means life force or breath. Jeff has taken the best of Kripalu yoga which is all about experiencing the postures more deeply and added breath and sound. This practice is outlined in a four session workshop and accompanied with easy to follow line drawings and a CD for home practice. Having a daily practice cultivates discipline by reinforcing consistency and persistence, two skills that are critical to the success of long term weight loss. Yoga is the perfect complement to the services other offered at Skyler Madison which also have the purpose of retraining the mind by changing perception. Every step, and every shift from where you are now to where you can go is what Skyler Madison and yoga are all about.

Why Yoga for weight loss?

Yoga gives power to your goals by helping you cultivate the capacity to merge your intentions with action. This is done by strengthening the following skills:

Replacing negative habits with positive ones: successful weight loss is supported by changing lifestyle habits. Instead of focusing on short-term strategies to drop a few pounds, yoga helps you find the balance that keeps you healthier by changing your habits. Unwanted habits are successfully changed by replacing them with something that is healthier and that enable you to feel great about yourself.

Cultivating awareness: Yoga is about uniting mind, body and breath. This process cultivates greater awareness and self understanding. Your practice can help you to begin to understand and see things about yourself that will make change easier and more natural. These changes come from within as opposed to being imposed from the outside. This is one of the reasons dieting is so unsuccessful for weight loss in the long run: it involves using the force of willpower to make changes that are being imposed from outside of ourselves which often foster feelings of deprivation.

Focusing on being fully present: The daily practice of yoga will help you improve your mental focus and discipline. Yoga teaches us to merge intention and desire with action. This enables you to cultivate the mindset to attain what previously felt unattainable. This mindset can also help create shifts in all areas of your life.

Being less stressed: Elevated cortisol levels from living a stressful life, as we all do, can make successful weight loss difficult. Yoga helps you to access something bigger that is within yourself that is immutable in the face of stress and insulates you from the unending changing patterns of living. Since yoga helps us to see and interpret things differently we experience less stress in our lives.
